Yesterday I began my 50th year on the planet. So today I am beginning a new project, building on a thing I did as I approached the milestone of 40. Every week for the next 51 weeks I’ll be picking one album from each of the calendar years I’ve been around. The albums will mean something to me.
We start with 1970. Recently watching a BBC documentary about the troubles in Northern Ireland, the place I spent the first few years of my life, it really does look like a different era.
And that, quite frankly, is because it was. But I have no recollection of the first five weeks I had in this world, so picking an album from 1970 (and the next few, to be fair) is more about things that have meant something to me since. So we begin with an album (Curtis, by Curtis Mayfield) that contains a track that never fails to raise my spirits (Move On Up). It’s only in the last few years I’ve discovered that there is an extended version of the track that goes on for days. And it’s wonderful.
