Today’s second coffee companion is a senior civil servant in one of the larger Whitehall departments. We walked as we talked.
We talked about the legacy of the Government Digital Service, and the extend to which it did make a difference and also how it didn’t.
We talked about the necessary secrecy in some parts of government and how that can make things difficult.
We chatted about how digital methods can work better for the delivery of customer or citizen facing services than they do for the delivery of business systems, and how the principles of the Agile Manifesto can be applied to waterfall projects.
We talked about mutual contacts in various parts of government, and also how there is no such thing as “the government”. We talked about the challenge that is getting into the Home Office building in Marsham Street, famed across Whitehall for being a massive pain in the bum.
We talked about the wonderful medieval backstreets around the City of London, and the beautiful website A London Inheritance.
I did my 10,000 steps.
