1977. The year of the Silver Jubilee. The year that the Sex Pistols took centre stage. It’s going to be a punk classic for #51For50 this week isn’t it?

Nope.

There’s a certain class of 70s music that sticks with me from hearing it on the radio on long journeys in the back of my parents car in the summer holidays. The Radio 1 roadshow. Hot vinyl seats. Sliding across the car as we went around corners (unless there were so many kids wedged in the back that we couldn’t move an inch).

The pop stuff has filtered out, but bizarrely some of the more AOR hasn’t. And Steely Dan are a band that for me epitomise my memories of the 1970s in a way that bands like the Sex Pistols simply do not.

On Aja, if I’m honest, I probably only really like Peg, and that’s almost certainly because I like the De La Soul song it was sampled on. Eye Know. But the whole thing evokes those days in the back of the car, travelling up to Suffolk or down to Devon to see grandparents, legs sticking to the hot black seats.
