Today’s #100coffees coffee companion is a management coach who came from the world of marketing strategy.

We talked about the importance of loose connections and how relationships that exist between people from different organisations are often stronger than those that exist between people within organisations – exploring a metaphor of organisations as families where just because you are related doesn’t mean you should be expected to like each other.

We talked about how deeply the idea of hierarchy is embedded into most people and most businesses, and how that by removing it strange things happen (not necessary good or bad, just strange).

We then got into a fascinating discussion about how tools like Belbin’s Team Roles and De Bono’s thinking hats might be a good way to help teams to quickly understand and develop psychological safety. We also talked about how conversational analysis might also form a part of the Psychological Safety story. These are things I need to explore further.
