TLAs define the language of many an organisation. (That’s three letter abbreviations for the most part for the pedants amongst you). One that appears in many is BAU – Business As Usual.
Now my personal jury is out on whether we are living through a period of unprecedented change, or just are experiencing the arrogance of every post-industrial revolution generation. Nonetheless, “as usual” is a dangerous phrase in a time of ongoing change. A century of businesses refining organisations on repeatable, Taylorist, lines leads to fragility. Fragility not only in process, but also in thinking. Thinking that this change will be the last one and then we’ll have business as usual.
Maybe we should start thinking about business as unusual as the desired state of mind?
