Seth Lakeman – Kitty Jay
2003 was a rubbish year for music. From memory I think I spent most of it listening to stuff from the late sixties and early seventies, and often from Brazil. The bridge point between the dying embers of the dance music era, and the emerging new indie scene, there was a lot of guff about, often by Cast.
One song that does stick out in my memory is Kitty Jay by Seth Lakeman. I watched him play and sing it live on Jools Holland and was blown away. The rest of the album was a bit po-faced in a pleasant enough West-Country kind of way, but I think was nominated for a Mercury in one of those terribly patronising ways that the music industry seems so fond of.
Number one on my birthday in 2003: Westlife – Mandy It's all Louis' fault…
