This week I have learned:
- for the last few years we’ve been on holiday, returning at the end of August. It’s strange this year to be back just as everyone else is heading off. Not sure I like it.
- the Black Forest is a beautiful place, but it’s geared for winter. 32 degrees plus (and 20s at night) was pretty brutal.
- I do wonder if we’d be better off just all agreeing to shut up shop in August.
- the new private members’ club at Craven Cottage is a wonderful place – was lucky enough to be invited to a meeting there this week (thanks Simon). Happy memories of Jason Lee’s 1998 goal that clinched the Championship for the Hornets.
- maybe the special sauce that makes for a good consultant is improvisation?
- the partial eclipse was much more spectacular than the one in 1999 which I remember clearly. We congregrated outside of the old BBC Worldwide offices at Woodlands and watched clouds change shades of grey.
The week in media:
Saw
- The Anish Kapoor exhibition at the Hayward Gallery. I can take or leave the later blood and guts, but the Vantablack and mirrors are mind bending.
- Series 5 of Slow Horses. The reviews were a bit sniffy, but I enjoyed it.
- The first two episodes of the new Ted Lasso. Yes, I’ve resubscribed to Apple TV.
Read
- Holiday reading: John Niven’s The Fathers. Very good.
- Rian Hughes’ The Black Locomotive which I’ve had on my shelf for yonks. Some lovely playing around with the format of the book.
- Now on Quite Ugly One Evening. I do like Chris Brookmyre.
Listened
- After listening to Nia Archives Emotional Junglist a bit more, I’m back on more original Drum and Bass.
Next week:
Cooling off in Glasgow.
