This week I have learned:

  • one thinks of Swedes as being sensible, maybe slightly reserved. Then you watch them at a football match and realise that the Viking spirit is still very strong. Bonkers displays at the weekend.
  • actually having the actual book in my actual hands was a life moment.
  • the ways in which the world is changing shouldn’t come as a surprise. Sitting outside a cafe looking out at a old sailing cargo ship permanently docked in Stockholm, I thought about all of the work involved in not only running but building and maintaining those boats and how all of that world has been replaced by container ships and big metal boxes. The history of humanity is the history of technological evolution and extinction.
  • the Stockholm underground system is a massive art gallery.
  • a thank you card in the post is such a powerful thing.
  • proud Dad moment on Friday afternoon as eldest gave the student address at the Year 11 Record of Achievement ceremony.

The week in media:

Saw

  • The movie Wild Style. Fascinating insight into the foundation days of Hip Hop, but not the most coherent of plots or the best acting, he says being very kind.
  • The Woman in Cabin 10. Functional thriller fodder.
  • Graphic Means – a history of typesetting. Fascinating if niche.

Read

  • Well, other than my own book…

Listened

  • the first part of a new documentary series on Radio 4 about Miles Davis to commemorate his 100th birthday. One of the things I treasure from my youth was that I got to see Miles play live twice, around the time of the Tutu album. A deeply troubled and troublesome character, but a constant innovator.

Next week:

  • Brum.
