The 1970s were a period during which Watford Football Club went through a number of iterations of the club crest. A time before shirt sponsors, and sometimes even kit manufacturers’ logos, by 1978 the Club settled on something that is vaguely the same as what is worn on the kit today, a shield containing what is often thought to be a moose, but in fact is a homage to the Hart of Hertfordshire, the county in which the town is located.
But between 1974 and 1978 there was a period when the club used a cartoon Hornet on their kit, and that Harry Hornet is an icon with which I have a ludicrously deep emotional connection.
It feels particularly fitting that Harry is the badge for May, the month which marks Watford’s fifth ever promotion to the top flight of English football.
