The 1970s were a period during which Watford Football Club went through a number of iterations of the club crest. A time before shirt sponsors, and sometimes even kit manufacturers’ logos, by 1978 the Club settled on something that is vaguely the same as what is worn on the kit today, a shield containing what is often thought to be a moose, but in fact is a homage to the Hart of Hertfordshire, the county in which the town is located.
But between 1974 and 1978 there was a period when the club used a cartoon Hornet on their kit, and that Harry Hornet is an icon with which I have a ludicrously deep emotional connection.
It feels particularly fitting that Harry is the badge for May, the month which marks Watford’s fifth ever promotion to the top flight of English football.

If you would like a May #SAE badge, and you live in the UK, then all you need to do is post a stamped, self-addressed envelope to me at 78 Holmesdale Road, TW11 9LG. Please make sure that you correctly stamp the one you send to me if your package is greater than 5mm deep, and you will want to use a Large Letter stamp on the return envelope as the badges are about 7mm thick, and please mark it “April”. There are still some of the previous badges available too.
I absolutely love Watford HORNET badge brings back so many good memories do you still have any left
Yes, there are a few left.
