podcast

Now that I’m back into the swing of rail commuting, I’m listening to podcasts again at a fair rate. Here’s the current playlist (for the record, the player I use is the Android App BeyondPod)

Radio 4’s Documentary of the Week: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4/r4choice/rss.xml
A fairly random selection, but there’s been some corkers recently – particularly a show about Irony, and another this week about Passwords…

Radio 4 on Music: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4/r4music/rss.xml
A selection (one a week) for a year from the BBC radio archives of documentaries about music. Germaine Greer’s programme about Frank Zappa the highlight so far…

From the Rookery End: http://feeds.feedburner.com/rookeryend
A monthly insight into the trials and tribulations of being a Watford fan…

Friday Night Comedy from BBC Radio 4: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4/fricomedy/rss.xml
Either The News Quiz or The Now Show (or sometimes something a bit rubbish in the middle of the summer)…

Food Programme: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4/foodprog/rss.xml
More from Radio 4 – the Food Programme covers as much about the food industry as it does about cooking and eating the stuff…

Music Weekly: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/series/musicweekly/podcast.xml
Alex Petrides and guests from The Guardian cover new music, old music, and ample swearing…

Comedy of the Week: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4/comedy/rss.xml
Another weekly random selection from Radio 4, this time from their comedy output…

WNYC’s Radiolab: http://feeds.wnyc.org/radiolab
The most beautiful radio programme ever produced, usually on a science-related subject. Often remarkably moving…

Tech Weekly: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/series/techweekly/rss
The Guardian’s weekly roundup of tech news…

Freakonomics Radio: http://feeds.feedburner.com/freakonomicsradio
Dubner and Levitt, authors of the book of the same name, give an economics spin on a range of subjects…

More or Less: Behind the Stats: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4/moreorless/rss.xml
…and Tim Harford from The FT gives a British economics version, often trying to debunk nonsense statistics…

The Bottom Line with Evan Davis: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4/bottomline/rss.xml
R4’s weekly business show, with three senior business folk talking on the topic of the week…

This American Life: http://feeds.thisamericanlife.org/talpodcast
Fairly random subjects, but glorious radio documentary production, from NPR in Chicago…

The Infinite Monkey Cage: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4/timc/rss.xml
A science-focused panel documentary with D:Ream’s Brian Cox…

CBeebies Radio: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio/cr/rss.xml
And finally, one for the kids – and little known. A daily ten minute burst of toddler-friendly radio from CBeebies. Great for long car journeys…

  1. Belated thanks for this list Matt. Many were already on my list too but for Radiolab alone, I will be eternally grateful (I wondered how a radio show could be “beautiful” – it is).

Monkey Cage is excellent too and had somehow passed me by. This American Life, though streaky, can be fantastic too. So thanks for the recommendations, they’ve given me plenty of brain fodder to listen to in car/on train/out-for-run.

    C.
