Bush House

I heard on the Today Programme this morning that this afternoon will see a milestone in broadcasting history as the BBC World Service makes its last transmission from its headquarters in Bush House in advance of a move back to Broadcasting House.

If you know me, you well know that the BBC has a very special place in my heart. Its not only the place where my parents met in the 1960s, but also where I spent eight formative years of my own career. Bush House was a place that i spent a little bit of time over the years, but most significantly where I was on the 9th September 2001.

I was at Bush for a monthly get together of Internet folk from across the organisation. The meeting was scheduled to start at 2pm, but an unusual number of people were late, and quite quickly news was coming through of incredible strain being put onto the BBC.co.uk Web infrastructure. Soon we had put a TV in the meeting room on, just in time to witness the second jet hit the tower.

It was obvious quite quickly that the meeting wasn’t going to happen, but a few of us stayed, transfixed, watching events unfold. A tragic, surreal personal memory of a building with so much history behind it.
