How start ups choose technologies

From a conversation with @bindik, @plankytronixx, @MikeOrmond and @mtaulty this week, an unordered list of things that start ups consider when they are making choices about which technologies to use:

  • is it free?
  • can I find people with the skills to develop on/with it?
  • can I hack things together quickly with it?
  • will a VC invest in me if I am using it (or, conversely, will a VC not invest in me if I am using it)?
  • for devices – what market exists?
  • is it a technology with which I am already familiar?

It’s then interesting to compare those criteria with this survey data http://robtiffany.com/software/what-developers-in-small-companies-are-using  that looks at what tech developers in small companies are using. Although the list above is unordered, it looks like is it free? tends to (economically unsurprisingly) have a very large influence…
