Nomenclature obsessions

Yesterday on Twitter I witnessed the term "hybrid cloud" for the first time. My somewhat cynical response was that a hybrid cloud probably has batteries and the ability to sneak up on you in silence.

I've become increasingly frustrated with the ongoing public/private/hybrid debate about what Cloud is, as it seems that both client and supply side of the industry are obsessing about what to call things whilst the rest of the world gets out their iPads to do business on Facebook. I guess that the legacy of Codd is probably something to do with IT's cultural legacy of wanting to be really sure about what things are called before being willing to do anything about them.

There is a temptation at this point to define out what I think Cloud is. That, of course, would be just perpetuating the nonsense. The point is that the twin forces of consumerisation and commoditisation are doing really big things to the way in which computing is both supplied and consumed, often to make people utterly unaware that there is any clever IT stuff going on behind the scenes. And that's the way it should be.
