A week or so ago I made the decision to move backup on my home PC into the Cloud. This coincided with moving our home ADSL onto an uncapped tariff, and an growing concern that at some point something about my home PC and its two internal drives would break.
I did a bit of research, asked a few questions on Twitter, and in the end selected Carbonite as way forward. This was based on a few factors – reviews, recommendations, the fact they have an Android app for mobile remote access, and finally because they have recently been sponsoring the wonderful Radiolab. There you go – the power of advertising!
So far, the application set looks pretty good (including the Windows client software that automatically backs up files as they are added and changed, the Android App, and the remote access Web app too). The time that the initial backup is still taking is the real eye-opener.
I've got about 60GB of mostly photo and music data. The music is all my old CD collection ripped (and mostly redundant these days since I really got into Spotify, but nonetheless useful to have backed up. The photos are the thing of real value, and amount to about 30GB-worth (and growing).
The initial backup has been running for a week, non-stop, and hasn't yet reached 50% of the total data volume.
The problem (which will only be really encountered once on this initial backup) is, of course, the A- bit of ADSL. Whilst I generally get a number of megabits (4 as I test it now) in download speed, ADSL still only delivers a few hundred kilobits of upload speed. Hence 60GB of data taking a couple of weeks to upload.
As I wrote recently, 60GB of data really isn't that much these days (heck, I can get 2/3 of that in my phone if I put my mind to it) until you come to the network, and particularly connections to the Internet…
Carbonite is a great online backup solution. Even if your upload speeds were higher, however, they still cap backups:
The first 35GB of data can achieve upload speeds of up to 2 mbps (megabits per second). Between 35GB – 200GB of data can have the upload speeds reach up to 512 kbps (kilobits per second). 200GB or more of data can be uploaded at up to 100 kbps (kilobits per second).
Our Carbonite review has more about the upload speeds and even a 10% off Carbonite offer code for users to save on their first year.
