Most interesting article.
Working for a Design Agency in IT. I have noticed that Apple cause increasingly most of the IT woes that we have, especially with it’s new OSX Leopard (which we were forced to roll out, due to the fact the any new hardware Apple shipped after Leopard came out would only be supported by Leopard. Bill Gates certainly would not have got away with this tactic with Vista). Also trying to run third party apps with the new OS is no fun either.
Whilst Apple grows and sells more products to the world we increasingly are being dictated to by designers and especially their HOD’s who all blindly worship Apple no matter how many times their Apple Mac Laptop crashes, their iPhone fails them or the fact that their iTunes library wont sync properly.
As an IT department no matter how much you state the problems with Apple you simply do not get listened to. Just get it working is the response. Interesting to note that IT as a dept is being told what to roll out and not the other way round! The politics of it all!
In a corporate world this would not be a problem as PC’s rule and are far more robust. Yes I know they have their faults too but we are not forced to buy products for the PC like we have to with a Mac as the article states: “OS X being wedded to the Mac, the iPod being dependent on the iTunes service, or iPhone software distribution being controlled via the Apple Store”
The sad thing about this is because of the Designer Mafioso who worship the altar of Steve Jobs we will never get out of this rut and Apple will be increasingly a part of IT especially in a Design Agency infrastructure. Macs rule and dominate and will increasingly do so in the world of design no matter how obvious it is that we are being fleeced. Get me my Mac fix now, NOT!
