This week I have learned:

  • yet again, that putting work out there is terrifying. We have pushed out nearly 100 sample packs for the book out to friends and strangers to solicit feedback. It’s like asking “Do you like my baby?”

Once I get over myself and take the feedback in the constructive way it is intended, it’s helping to refine how we present the content, and the book as a whole. Invaluable. But that utility doesn’t take away from the feelings of being slapped every time someone doesn’t say it’s the best thing ever.
  • that LLMs are maybe merely a pocket calculator moment for the digitally native generation.
  • creating visual content is putting to bed the comments of my art teacher Miss Moon that I couldn’t draw.
  • I’m realising that bounded periods of uncertainty are really troubling. I’m doing jury service soon, and so I have a two week block in my diary where I can’t assume that I can do anything workwise.

It might end after less than a day and I’ll be back to work.

Last time it lasted a week and then I was sent home.

I know someone who ended up on a three-month trial a few years ago.

All of which means that there’s a liminal space in my life over which I have no control. It’s very unsettling.
  • We now have fibre to the home. I remember when that would have been exciting, but these days it just restores the quality of service I had up until a couple of months ago, but because of reasons got downgraded.
  • I love that the fibre is coming out of a box in the pavement emblazoned with the words “GPO Telegraphs”.

The week in media:

Listened

The audiobook of Year of the Rat, an expose of far-right groups in the UK. It’s terrrifying.

Watched

The first few episodes of the new series of Blue Lights. It’s very good television.

Read

A huge amount of my own book as we come towards the end of the editorial process.

Next week:

Wrapping up before a temporary hiatus.
