This week I have learned:
- to enjoy the silence. After four months of hectic, I’ve entered a lull. This is nice because it’s allowed me to collect my thoughts a bit. And do some experiments.
- talking of which – experimenting with using NotebookLM to create surveys for “maturity assessment”-type activities. It’s fascinating and appears to be producing some really useful materials on face value. Point your LLM at the right source material, and you can quickly generate a helpful starting point for repeatable research tools.
- I had the delight of lunch with my friend Geraldine this week. She self-describes as an “elder” and has a wealth of stories to tell from her long and fascinating career. She also showed real interest in some of the things that I do. It was wonderful.
- The key to this LLM malarky is that you need to have good ideas about what to do with it. I’m not sure the people making the technology have many good ideas about how it might be applied, but this has probably always been the case.
The week in media:
Listened
My latest crop of vinyl, which included the most recent albums from Ibibio Sound Machine, Albertine Sarges, Sampa the Great and Janelle Monae.
Watched
At last got to see Adolescence. Some amazing performances, and incredible storytelling. I loved the pace that that single-shot filming gave to the narrative.
I also watched the first three episodes of the new Black Mirror season. Crikey, the first one was depressing.
Read
Still working through Inventology.
Next week
A 4-day week and a trip to Suffolk.
