This week I have learned:

  • after another successful circumnavigation of the sun, I feel about 64 rather than 54. I’ve got a sore leg (the result of a “sporting” injury) and a head full of snot.
  • I got to catch up with a former colleague who now works for the Football Association, whose offices are at Wembley Stadium. Behind the scenes it was fascinating, not least quite how many people work there even when there’s nothing on, and also how (like in shopping centres and theatres) the front of house is terribly plush but no expense has been spent when it comes to behind the scenes.
  • I also got to catch up with my former boss from my BBC days, who I hadn’t seen in ages. All of this is reminding me of how it’s nearly 20 years since I left the Beeb, and I think there is probably a series of posts to reflect on that milestone which ended what was a very significant period of my career and which I look back on with great fondness. Prepare yourself for stories about going drinking with celebrities (once), how whilst the number of people who claim to have invented the iPlayer is huge, very few of us can claim to have built a thing that predated the iPlayer, and more anecdotes as and when I remember them.
  • I have a little theory emerging that the more indecipherable someone’s job title, the more likely it is that their organisation focused more internally than externally.
  • One of these days I need to compile all of my little theories.
  • The British Museum is not the same place as British Library. If you make that mistake, it’s about a 15 minute walk.

Next week: a trip to Manchester (last of 2024)
