This week I have learned:

  • about the delight that is Manchester Tech Festival. A very different event to the usual male-dominated nonsense in the industry. A huge range of people, thinking and conversation.
  • that the hard work is worth it. You can’t avoid it. If you want to make an impact you do need to put in a lot of time, energy and effort. My talk at MTF is the best thing I’ve ever done. And I’m indebted to Marcus and Jonathan and Nick and all the people who came along to rehearsals for their help in making it so.
  • next week will be new takes on the content. Looking forward to where those experiments may go.
  • I’ve been idly thinking about agile versus waterfall and effectiveness. Some blogging next week hopefully.
  • also from conversations this week: organisations can get to a size where their sheer momentum means that they become focused internally rather than externally. The hypothesis is that when job titles mean nothing to the outside world, your organisation has made that shift.
  • My job title at Microsoft was “Developer Evangelism Breadth Lead”

Next week: new experiments and a trip to Amsterdam
