This week I have learned:

  • why I tend to cycle to work now. Had a couple of days going in to London on the train and was reminded of the delays, the crowds, the subterranean tube… I also found out that the bike ride, even though electric, means I use up about 900 calories each day.
  • how enjoyable the path from research to analysis to hypothesis can be. It’s the social scientist thing – I’ve been working on something looking at how we operate and going through the stages from survey design through to the synthesis of data. It’s been very enjoyable and to an extent feels like one of the few things that I’ve actually been trained to do.
  • the continued deluge of education speak disturbs me. The school our kids attend is great. But whenever we attend sessions run for parents we are confronted by the full force of the language of educational professionals. I suppose we all fall into the trap of expecting people to have our prior knowledge once in a while.
  • the whole exercise of creating and distributing a little momento to the #100Coffees participants has also given me great joy.
  • my barometer for whether I’m doing a good job or not is when people – colleagues, clients, suppliers, whoever – come to me as a sounding board or for advice. That’s happening. Which is good, because it makes me reckon I’m probably doing OK (and we all need a bit of reassurance like that every so often).
  • Twitter is just grinding to a halt. It’s a shame, but that’s how it goes.
  • it’s amazing how many spare parts are available for white goods.

Next week: Manchester
