This week I have learned:

  • that my youngest is doing pretty well at school. The annual parents evening, still a Zoom showreel in neat 4-minute chunks, was nice.
  • getting unsolicited feedback is the best sort. Thanks to John Sills for the lovely write-up of the PlayCards.
  • I spent some time un-DRMing my e-book library. Knowing that they can’t now be turned off by accident or subterfuge is nice to know. That I’ve bought 350 books since moving electronic back in 2013 is slightly alarming. Having the ability to free text search my entire e-library is fascinating. And I found a few that I need to re-read. There’s a good guide here.
  • completing my first hand-drawn presentation has been an interesting exercise in creativity.
  • the political shenanigans continue. If you can put aside cynicism (I know), it must be quite hard for the majority of MPs in Parliament to now be so vividly confronted with such strong evidence of how misplaced their trust in Johnson was.
  • I’ve shifted a bunch more of my computing to Mac OS. I don’t think it’s inherently any more or less user-friendly than PC, but the closed hardware means that interaction between software and external devices (bluetooth midi, for example) is way slicker, and the RISC silicon means it runs silently (a big deal if you are recording).
  • have you used a printer recently? You know, one of those big ol’ multifunction devices you find in offices. Photocopiers in old money. Good grief they are a UX/UI disaster zone.
  • picking up something new and interesting at work. More on that next week.

Next week: splitting my time, and an evening out with clients.

The week in photos…
