This week I have learned:

  • there are certain points in projects, the “milestones”, that might be better described as millstones. Points of playback, or reflection, decision points or just notional lines in the sand. They can put people under huge stress. Working out ways to reduce that stress, but still keep people motivated, is key I guess, unless you can remove them entirely.
  • the weird behaviour of UK gambling companies spending money to advertise how their products have features to protect you from the dangers of their products is probably quite a bit like the weird behaviour of the AI industry catastrophizing about the dangers of AI. Both industries are attempting to make themselves look responsible because they know regulation is coming.
  • you can’t regulate inanimate objects. You can’t regulate technologies. You can regulate the actions of human beings who are responsible for inanimate objects or technologies.
  • it’s really rewarding to get good feedback. There’s been a bit of that week. It’s been a good week.
  • I’m starting to get the feeling that government in the UK is grinding to a halt. Everyone knows change is coming. The current administration appear to now be focusing on booby-trapping things for whoever comes next.
  • I thoroughly enjoy cycling to work. Wonder if that will be the same when the winter comes?

Next week: what do you mean a whole five days?
