A metaphor heard when planning is being done at the same time as execution. Hey – actually planning and replanning is a continuous activity – this metaphor is heard when there isn’t a single grain of planning in evidence and everyone’s just working on the seat of their pants (particularly painful during taxiing and takeoff…).
Building an aeroplane whilst it is heading down the runway has only one possible outcome. Certain death.
What might make a better metaphor? Doing a night on the improv stage? Making like Dizzy Gillespie? Jumping out of an aeroplane without a parachute, even.
I now challenge you to watch this guff from EDS and at the end of it not want them to all just, well, go build their certain death jet plane…
