One in 2 million: my part in the LinkedIn story

LinkedIn, or Facebook for boring people, is celebrating it’s 200 millionth subscriber by informing people who sit in the top 1% of viewed profiles and top 5% of viewed profiles of that exciting news.

I fall in the 1%. Which tells me a few things…

Firstly, that “top 1%” sounds an awful lot better than “top 2 million” and as a result yet again indicates how terrible the human brain usually is in processing numbers; and secondly that (given how many of my contacts also seem to be in the top 1-5%) how long a tail there appears to be of dormant accounts on the service.

Don’t get me wrong – I think LinkedIn is a great service. But marketing on membership of percentiles doesn’t do anything for me…
