Joyce – Aldeia de Ogum
The first track from the 1980s, and another introduced to me through a Gilles Peterson compilation – this time around, Blue Brazil, a sampler of Brazilian music from the Blue Note label which became a very treasured album for me in the mid-1990s.
The Joyce track has one of my favourite ever snare drums. There's something almost drum and bassy about it, and in the period when once in a while I'd man the decks in the chill out rooms for friends' tediously hard house nights, this would be one of the tracks I'd play when I wasn't out to try and play with people's minds.
Number one on my birthday in 1980:Blondie – Tide is High A surprisingly good choice by the British record-buying public on the occasion of my 10th birthday.
